We have teamed up with the Star Institute (part of the Star MAT – one of England’s highest performing Trusts) to offer secondary member schools high quality professional development in Instructional Coaching.
Many schools have identified Instructional Coaching as a key training area and it is recognised that whilst Instructional Coaching is central to a number of key developments in education (NPQs, the ECF and more), the skill itself requires time and practice.
This course will develop these skills and enable schools to embed a culture of continuous improvement via instructional coaching throughout your school and will be delivered by Jesse Coburn, a renowned trainer who has significant experience of working with Uncommon Schools’ Senior Leaders in the US.
The training will consist of six, two-and-a-half hour online sessions between January and June 2022.
SWIFT is providing a £200 subsidy* for Secondary Members.
The Small Teams rate is £200 (for one Senior Leader + three Middle Leaders, normal price £400) and the Large Teams rate is £425 (one Senior Leader + seven Middle Leaders, normal price is £625)**.
* Subsidy only applies to Secondary Members, including settings with secondary age pupils.
SWIFT subsidises the Subject Leader Briefing Series for Primary Members.

As part of the Government’s long-term education post-Covid recovery plan, full scholarship funding is FREE to applicants in state-funded schools for all the NPQ programmes.
It is however, conditional on the successful validation of participants’ registration information against Teaching Regulation Agency records. Hence, applicants must ensure that the information supplied to their NPQ provider matches their teacher record.

Leading Schools South West (LSSW) is a registered charity that since 2012 has seen over 3,000 leaders graduate on its NPQ courses. It has one of the highest ratings from the DfE QA process of all national providers to date. It pioneered NPQs through an Apprenticeship route, with over 150 leaders taking advantage of this route, all successfully and over 60% with Apprenticeship distinctions.
Over 375 leaders have already registered for Cohort 1a.
Teach First is a national charity offering innovative ITT courses, NPQ and other school improvement courses. Teach First has 18 years’ experience designing and delivering high-quality training to schools that need it most. TF have reached >19,000 Teachers across its programmes, including ITT (rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 41/48 areas) and the current NPQs.
90% of NPQ alumni report they can now implement improvements to their school, and 100% of Headteachers were satisfied with TF’s Leading Together programme and Headship First pilot (which supports those new to Headship).
All NPQs are taught through a blended balance of online individual learning, online seminars and face-to-face meetings. They are designed in recognition that leaders are already busy people, with a simplified end-of-course assessment. There are two cohorts annually, in the Autumn and Spring.

As a collective, we are committed to providing schools with a wide range of high quality CPD at highly affordable rates.
The majority of courses offered here can be accessed either through the SWIFT Membership package, which entitles schools to no charge / discounted rates. Over 60% of pupils in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay attend a school that is a SWIFT Member! Alternatively, schools can access all the programmes on a pay-as-you-go basis. We are pleased to offer this programme to support Recently Qualified Teachers (RQTs) in their second year of teaching (RQTs / Year 2 ECTs) in order to continue to build on an excellent start to their career.
This year’s programme has been planned specifically to ensure that sessions help to support teachers who have experienced disruption to their first year due to the COVID-19 situation. Organised in core themes, the programme will be delivered through a series of twilight sessions designed to respond to the needs of teachers in the early stages of their teaching career.
Numbers permitting, sessions 2, 4 and 5 will be led by experienced facilitators in their field and will be delivered in groups according to the subject/phase specialism of the teacher. We will seek to exemplify key standards outlined in the Early Career Framework by providing related practical strategies that can be easily applied in the classroom.

Did you know?
All state-funded schools that currently have an NQT due to complete their induction this summer will be eligible for a one-off payment of £1200, which equates to 44 hours of additional time to invest in their development.
Schools that receive the payment may be asked to explain how they have used this time and, as such, registering for this free programme will help you demonstrate to the Department for Education how you have supported your RQT.

The Early Career Framework (ECF) is a statutory two-year package of high-quality professional development (training, support, and resources) for schools with Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs)*
Part of the Department for Education’s Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy, the ECF supports Early Career Teachers (and their Mentors) in the first two years of teaching.
Kingsbridge Teaching School Hub (part of Education South West) and Colyton Teaching School Hubs will be working with Teach First to create an area-wide partnership that supports schools across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay.
The statutory assessment of Early Career Teachers is also changing to two-years to correspond to the Early Career Framework and SWIFT will be providing this support through its Appropriate Body service.

All schools that offer a statutory induction are required to have an Appropriate Body (AB) for their Early Career Teachers (ECTs). Appropriate Bodies play a key role in statutory teacher induction.
From September 2021, in addition to monitoring that ECTs receive their statutory entitlements, Appropriate Bodies will support schools and ECTs to meet the new statutory guidance.
As one of our Teaching School Hub responsibilities, from September 2021, SWIFT will provide one streamlined AB service for primary and secondary ECTs across the South West. This service will also cater for NQTs who have already commenced induction prior to September 2021.
Through moderation and quality assurance, SWIFT will work collaboratively with schools to ensure that ECTs are fairly and consistently assessed. In line with the new guidance, we will also be conducting fidelity checks, ensuring ECTs are receiving a programme of support and training based on the Early Career Framework (ECF).
The new SWIFT AB service combines the expertise of three very established AB teams from across the South West: NQTSW (West Country TSA and Ventrus TSA) and Torbay TSA; with over 17 years of experience.

The introduction of the new Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) 2020 guidance for September has put the holistic development of our young people back at the centre of education.
All schools will be required to deliver a broad, rich and appropriate RSHE curriculum to all pupils. This will be challenging for many schools and RSHE Ready is here to help address some of the most pressing challenges. The Whole School SEND Consortium, hosted by nasen, is delivering the Department for Education SEND Schools’ Workforce Support Contract.
It brings together schools, organisations and individuals who are committed to ensuring that every child and young person with SEND can maximise their potential.
Whole School SEND recognise that understanding the local context is crucial to improving national SEND provision. Each region has a Regional SEND team, formed from school-based SEND practitioners, to support the prioritisation of SEND across the region and reflect the Department for Education's Regional Schools Commissioners areas.
The South West region covers the Local Authorities of Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Plymouth, Poole Borough, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, The Isles of Scilly, Torbay and Wiltshire.
The current role is to work in collaboration with all stakeholders to promote good practice for SEND across the region. The role of Whole School SEND is to support schools in prioritising SEND in conjunction with families, children and young people. The aim in the South West is to build a community of practice to meet the needs of children and young people. This is Engineering: Sustainable Futures
Some of the biggest challenges we face stem from how we interact with our environment, and engineering is at the heart of finding sustainable solutions. From renewable power to recycling, to making our homes more energy efficient, this is a vital field. Challenges in this STEM resource invite learners to explore some of these important and pressing challenges that we face as a society and to act and think like engineers as they come up with their own solutions to a sustainable innovation design challenge.
The sustainable innovation design challenge will form part of a competition where we want to see the sustainable design innovations from teams of students from across the UK. Shortlisted teams will have the opportunity to bring their innovations to life with prizes from the Academy; as well as being invited to showcase their work at the Connecting STEM Teachers 10 year celebration event next summer.
The competition will launch in September.
Those attending will receive free training on the Academy’s latest resource: This is Engineering: Sustainable Futures. Teachers will receive a box containing teacher and student guides and distributable packs of equipment and materials to deliver these activities to your pupils, whether they are in school or learning remotely.

The Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism (QCF) is a bespoke primary school Physical Education qualification, developed by the Association for Physical Education (AfPE) and Sports Leaders UK.
The aim of the qualification is to up-skill primary teachers to assist in the delivery of high quality primary school P.E. and raise the standards of P.E. teaching and meet OFSTED expectations for effective use of P.E. and Sports Premium funding.
On successful completion of the course, participants will gain the Association for Physical Education (AfPE) and Sports Leaders UK Level 5 Certificate in Primary Physical Education Specialism Course.

£1,000 | £500 will be required prior to 5 October 2021 to secure a place and a second payment of £500 on completion of the course immediately after 24 May 2022.

The EEF is currently running a project to establish the larger scale efficacy of the Oxford University Working Memory (WM) and Working Memory + Arithmetic (WM+A) programmes.
This will build on previous smaller studies that show the programmes to be effective with promise for scaling up and 20 schools are to be recruited in the South West region to take part.
The programme is Teaching Assistant-led and teacher supported and involves the TA teaching 10 children one lesson a week in pairs, which is five hours of teaching time.
Schools applying should have at least 30 children in their Year 3 cohort.
Schools that are accepted into the project will then be randomly assigned either:

This will involve free training for a teacher and a Teaching Assistant, as well as free access to the materials needed to deliver it.
OR a place as a control group for the trial:
These schools will be given a cash grant, equal to the value of having to purchase the programme. This money can be used later to train a teacher and a Teaching Assistant on Working Memory (WM) and Working Memory + Arithmetic (WM+A) programmes, or can be spent at the school’s discretion.

Oracy (Primary) Work Groups
This Work Group is designed to support the children to learn ‘through talk and to talk’ (Voice 21 benchmark) and to deepen students’' understanding of Maths by using strategies for oracy to develop students' reasoning skills.
Central to the Work Group is establishing a community of practice, aiming to answer the research question: How can oracy deepen students' mathematical reasoning?
It will also consider specific pedagogical strategies and the impact that the specific pedagogy of oracy can have on students’ mathematical thinking and securing understanding.
Oracy (Secondary) Work Groups
Work Groups in this project aim to deepen students’ understanding of Maths by using strategies for oracy to develop students' reasoning skills and to support them in making connections with Mathematical structure.
Central to the Work Group is establishing a community of practice, aiming to answer the research question: How can Oracy deepen students' mathematical reasoning? This Work Group will consider pedagogical strategies and the impact that the specific pedagogy of Oracy can have on students’ mathematical thinking and securing understanding.
Local Work Group design will follow a workshop – school-based work cycle, consisting of several workshops followed in each case by specific school-based work.
Collaborative planning and lesson study are encouraged, all participants focus on developing mathematical oracy across the curriculum and work collaboratively to explore this in their schools.
Cross-phase collaboration is encouraged wherever possible. Participants are expected to consider ways to develop the approaches explored during the project with other staff in their schools.

Executive Function Cognitive Science Research and Innovation Work Group
Executive Function (EF) has been described as “the management system of the brain” because the skills involved let us set goals, plan, and get things done.
It includes three categories: inhibitory control, working memory and attention shifting/cognitive flexibility
and predicts Maths achievement, as well as success in school broadly.
Most teachers rate Executive Function components as important for Maths thinking and learning, and these ratings increase with teaching experience.
This is an action-research Work Group focused on the following questions:
Participants will work together to consider how to modify tasks, to increase/decrease executive demand to put into action in their own classrooms, and then share and reflect on observations of the impact on both the Mathematics explored and the resulting Mathematical understanding of their learners.

Primary Teachers Specialist Knowledge for the Teaching of Mathematics Programme
This programme is designed to support primary teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching Mathematics, and thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in Maths in the classroom.
It is designed for teachers who would like to further develop their specialist knowledge for teaching Maths and is particularly relevant for teachers that have moved phases or teachers that have not received Maths-specific training.
The programme will be delivered across four days with in-school work in-between plus a short introductory session.
Schools are encouraged to engage at least two participants in a group, where possible, in order to maximise learning and impact and will support participants:

Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics for Secondary Non-Specialist Teachers
CODE Maths Hub have updated their eligibility criteria for the SKTM Secondary Non-Specialist group, which will be starting in the Spring Term.
Applications will now also be accepted from Teaching Assistants who are responsible for teaching some students Maths and also non-specialists who will be teaching Maths in the near future.
The programme is based on six key themes:
